About the story

When thirteen‑year‑old Mira Murphy is assaulted in the woods, a terrible power awakens in her. Strange events follow, causing mass panic and apocalyptic chaos in her town. Two years later, Mira discovers that her parents are withholding a big secret from her, and her trust in them begins to crumble. She then meets Lilith, a girl from China, who soon becomes her best and only friend. Unfortunately, the same power awakens in Mira once more when she saves Lilith from a gang of thugs, bringing the same ill fate upon their town. Despite Lilith’s unwavering faith in Mira and her role as a savior, Mira can’t help but suspect she is, in fact, the Devil. Meanwhile, a secret organization has been working tirelessly to look for the mythical Pandora’s box for what’s said to be left behind in it, and plans have been set in motion to secure it at all costs. As more evidence surfaces and more mysterious events unfold, will Mira be able to face the truth and live up to Lilith’s expectation in the end? Who is she, really, and what is her role in this world? And most importantly, will she be able to save the world and everyone she has come to care for—from herself?

About the author

Sisi Zhao is the mother of two loving and energetic preteens and the dedicated servant to an unsociable senior cat. Before her children were born, Sisi was a career woman working as an HR manager at a Fortune 500 company. After she became a mother, she chose parenting as her full‑time job instead. Though Sisi had always planned on returning to the corporate world when both of her children were in school, COVID‑19 and her health got in the way, during which, she decided to write a story to inspire and, hopefully, bring a little bit of sunshine to those who are also hurting in life. Now, Sisi focuses on improving her health to embrace perimenopause as well as the new challenges in motherhood as her children transition from preteens to teens, and she continues to enjoy her love for cute, beautiful, and magical things like animals, flowers, plush toys, fashion dolls, music, art, museums, conjuring up stories, and reading—particularly sci‑fi, fantasy, mythology, fairy tales, and folklore.

Her hope and dream

Sisi loves fairy tales. When she was little, she thought they weren't just tales, and she believed there was real magic in the world. As Sisi grew older, she gradually came to realize the only magic that exists in the real world is Mother Nature, but at least she could still seek out magic in books and let her imagination run free in the stories that were conjured up by her inner child. In 2014, Sisi moved to US with her cat, her husband, and her then 1-year-old daughter. Now, in spite of the fact that she's already a middle-aged, perimenopausal woman and the mother of two preteens, Sisi still wishes she could come across a genie one day. And if she were ever lucky enough to find one, she would ask for a magic wand that could restore love and peace to the heart of every lonely, lost, hurt, angry, sad soul in the world.
